The Carmel Bach Festival is beginning its search for its next Artistic Director and Principal Conductor.

Our goal is to attract an exceptional musical leader to drive the continuing evolution of the artistic elements of the more than 80-year-old Festival, the longest-running summer music festival in California.

The Artistic Director and Principal Conductor creates the annual and long-term artistic plan for the Festival in collaboration with the Festival’s Artistic Leadership Team. He/she conducts the Festival Orchestra and Festival Chorale on most Main Concerts.

Applications will be accepted until November 30, 2020. A limited number of finalists will be selected by mid-2021 and invited to conduct at the 2022 Festival, after which a final decision will be made by the Festival’s Board of Directors. The formal engagement will begin immediately, and the first priority of the new Artistic Director and Principal Conductor will be to plan the 2023 Festival and present a longer-term artistic vision covering multiple future seasons.

“Talented musicians, generous donors, devoted patrons, and the beautiful Central Coast community of Carmel-by-the-Sea are the key characteristics of the Festival,” said President Cyril Yansouni. “We look forward to finding the inspiring, collaborative and forward-thinking leader to build on our solid foundation and provide artistic vision and leadership for the next chapter of the Festival’s life story.”
