The Bowerbird Collective
A Season on the Wind: Music for Migratory Birds
Presented by the Carmel Bach Festival
Sunday, May 26 at 7:30PM, Carmel High School Center for Performing Arts
The Bowerbird Collective (Anthony Albrecht, cello; Simone Slattery, violin); Majel Connery, singer.
The Carmel Bach Festival is excited to expand its activities beyond the July festival with a special concert, “A Season on the Wind,” which celebrates the epic migration of North American birds, performed by The Bowerbird Collective, a stellar musical ensemble from Australia that “makes art for nature.” They combine live music, spectacular visuals, and immersive soundscapes to tell nature stories that cross the arts/science divide, “a delicate and beautiful fusion” (Australian Birdlife Magazine).
The Bowerbird Collective was invited by the Biggest Week in American Birding (BWIAB) to adapt conservationist Kenn Kaufman’s book of the same name. They commissioned the Brothers Balliett to write music inspired by North American bird migration. Doug’s musical influences include Renaissance and Baroque music, rap, and the Beatles. In the tradition of J.S. Bach, Doug writes a new church cantata every week for St. Mary’s Church in New York. Brad is a musician and “bird nerd.”
Composer and singer Majel Connery will join the Bowerbird Collective and also perform “The Rivers Are Our Brothers,” her electronic song cycle on ecological responsibility told from the point of view of the land.
