Instrumental Coaching in Schools

PLAY!

Performing and Learning Arts for Youth

PLAY! supports and grows existing instrumental music programs in underserved areas, including North County, South County, and Salinas. Many of these students have not had the same early start in music as their peers, whether through comprehensive school programs or private lessons.

Our teaching artists coach in small groups and sometimes one-on-one, always at the discretion of the site music teacher. PLAY! is designed to support the school music program and its teachers so they can raise the bar and reach higher.

How It Works

While we occasionally visit a school for an assembly, concert, and coaching, most of PLAY! centers on adopting several schools each year. Returning again and again makes the impact deeper and more meaningful, and builds stronger connections with each school and its students.

We also have limited funding for the Monterey Peninsula, reaching middle and high schools in Seaside and Marina.

Recent Impact

  • In Fall 2025, PLAY! reached four schools in Salinas, Soledad, and Marina, with support from The Harden Foundation and Pebble Beach Company Foundation.
  • New grants from Dunspaugh-Dalton and renewing grants from the Pebble Beach Company Foundation and the Community Foundation for Monterey County will fund the expansion of PLAY! in Fall 2026 and Winter/Spring 2027.
  • The Harden Foundation awarded a two-year grant covering 2026 and 2027.
  • Our adopted schools include Gavilan View Middle School, North Monterey County Middle School, and North Monterey County High School.

“After this clinic, I was inspired to play more. I learned new bow positions and practice habits. The music changed the way I feel about my instrument and how I play.”

Ethan Vazquez, age 13

“Today, I feel really motivated and inspired to practice more. Being instructed to change our ideas on things like bow position and left hand fingering has helped improve our overall playing as an orchestra!”

Emma Mendez, age 17

SOuL!

Sing Out Loud

Sing Out Loud! is a songwriting residency for 5th and 6th grade students. Our teaching artists, all professional singers, lyricists, and composers, work with two classrooms at a time in small groups. Together, students write up to six original songs, which they then perform later in the school year.

The program is currently on hiatus, pending teaching artist availability.

Why It Matters

These school-based programs extend the Festival’s reach to students who may otherwise have limited access to live classical music. They foster curiosity, creativity, and early arts engagement, and build a confidence in young people that spills into their whole school experience. Music-making creates community, engaged citizens, and enduring connections, all of which contribute to the well-being of young people.

As a music teacher in a Title I school, I see every day how access to the arts can transform students’ confidence, curiosity, and sense of belonging. Many of our students face systemic barriers that limit their exposure to high-quality arts instruction and enrichment opportunities outside of school. Programs like PLAY! bring meaningful solutions to these community challenges and we can increase equity and ensure that all students—regardless of background—have access to inspiring, skill-building experiences.

The Carmel Bach Festival outreach program, which brings professional artists into the classroom, provides students with the rare opportunity to work directly with accomplished musicians, engage in inquiry-based learning, and experience live performance in an intimate educational setting. These interactions not only deepen their understanding of artistic concepts but also nurture creativity, collaboration, and leadership skills.
