The Carmel Bach Festival Young Artists Showcase recognizes outstanding young musicians from the Central Coast Section of the California Music Education Association. Selected students are invited to perform on a special Young Artists Showcase concert during the Carmel Bach Festival at the Sunset Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Young Artists also receive a recording and photos of the live performance.
Auditioners must have not started their initial year in college. Recent high school graduates are eligible (e.g. students who have just graduated and have yet to begin college). Auditioners must reside in or study with a teacher in Monterey County, Santa Cruz County, San Benito County or San Luis Obispo County, California. The auditions are open to instrumentalists and vocalists, both soloists and small ensembles.
Repertoire may be chosen from any era, but should be traditional “classical’ music within the Western music tradition. While we encourage memorization, it is not a requirement in the auditions or in the concert.
Audition repertoire should be a minimum of 3-4 minutes, and is limited to 8-9 minutes. An entry may consist of more than one piece or movement, providing the total time does not exceed 8-9 minutes. Performers are free to choose whether or not to play repeats. It is perfectly fine to offer one or more movements from a larger work, such as a suite or concerto. The Showcase Director may have to limit audition time due to allow for comments and to stay on schedule.
Whether or not a student is chosen for the concert, we believe the audition process is a valuable experience. Students learn discipline and musicianship through having memorized, prepared, and performed for the auditions. Each student will receive feedback from our judging panel immediately after the audition.
Local music educator Barbara Priest, Artistic Director of PG Pops Orchestra and music teacher at Pacific Grove Middle School, will direct the competition.
Soloists must provide their own accompanist for any piece that requires accompaniment. Accompanists are NOT subject to the age requirement, and need not complete an application. We just need contact information.
Each entrant requires a separate application form, with all information filled in accurately. Ensemble entries will require additional application forms with Section A completed for each ensemble member. Accompanists need to supply contact info only.
Each audition piece should be identified exactly and completely, with key, work number (Opus, BWV, etc.) and exact timing.
